Environment Education
AWARE has also initiated schemes of Environment awareness and development like Sericulture, Social forestry and Horticulture etc. Besides promoting social and environmental awareness, these schemes also generate employment and income for the Tribal people.

The Tribals protect forest as their life is woven around it and they use forest produces including trees carefully because they owe their existence to the forest. Unfortunately, when forest became property of the Government and forest department took over the responsibility they blamed the Tribal for forest destruction.

If Tribal’s do not own the forest, then its protection is in danger and so AWARE through its village meetings, motivational training camps formed 142 “Vanarakshana Samiti”, these group of Tribal’s often intercepted the trucks illegally transporting logs. In most of the Tribal villages, common grazing land was protected and right to collect and sell minor forest produce is ensured.

AWARE encouraged Tribals to plant trees around their houses and the village like mangoes, jackfruit etc. By 1987, these villages planted and grown 300,000 trees and were awarded with ‘certificates of appreciation’ by forest department. AWARE also helped with 14,000 acres of Horticulture – mangoes, oranges, pineapple tress are grown that is yielding considerable income for the Tribals.

Among the Harijans due to lack of land, the social forestry and horticulture could not be undertaken and hence introduction of Milch animals, 2,600 of bio-gas plants were erected and used for kitchen purpose. AWARE promoted 14,332 of less smoke chullas provided by the non-conventional energy department.

With the financial and technical assistance provided by the Government of Andhra Pradesh AWARE undertook watershed management program for 8 years in Chintur and Tirumalaypalam (Khammam district), Kandukur mandal (Ranga Reddy district). AWARE trained more than 2000 farmers on water conservation, soil management. These programs involved people in building of check dams, farm ponds, social forestry and horticulture and as a result total 60,000 acres were covered involving 163 villages in all the 3 regions and within 5 years there was visible development in the increase of the water table, fodder protection, new horticulture growth in the regions.

AWARE gave top priority to environmental and ecological protection and always recognized that Environmental Rights are Human Rights.
